Catalogue of the Exhibition.

The legacy of Egypt was technological as well as artistic. Its contributions extended to agriculture, building techniques, medicine, and social development. Ethical and religious activities, best known from their literature, are also reflected in objects of daily use. Too often we admire only the gifts for the dead. In this catalogue we hope to show the way the Egyptians lived, played, and worked.

The present exhibition is the fruit of years of research by Edward Brovarski and his co-workers Susan K. Doll and Rita E Freed. It represents an Egyptologist's response to the most recent groundswell of interest in ancient Egypt, generated by the American tour of "The Treasures of King Tutankhamun.” Although much of the material in the exhibition owes its survival to Egypt's ancient mortuary traditions, it reflects not life after death but real life along the banks of the Nile as it was lived in the days of the pharaohs. We hope that this focus on the people in their daily activities will offer a human perspective on ancient Egypt, its people and its culture.
